Electronystagmography (ENG)
Our balance system is determined by our visual system, the inner ear, and our sense of movement. When we become dizzy, these systems are not working or functioning properly.
An Electronystagmography (ENG) test will be recommended in order to evaluate the balance (vestibular) system and assist in identification of the cause of dizziness. This test takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes to complete. Several electrodes are placed around the eyes and on the forehead in order to record various eye movements. The patient is then asked to move his head and body into different positions to see if any nystagmus (rapid eye movement caused by dizziness) is elicited. The final part of the test consists of putting cool and warm air into the ear canals for 30-60 seconds. This will probably cause some dizziness, however this is normal and is of short duration. The induced dizziness should subside by the end of the test.
